Childrens feet and legs

Normal children are growing and changing. Many parents notice that their child's feet or legs seem an odd shape.

Common problems are flat feet, in toeing, out toeing, bow legs, and knock knees.

FLAT FEET

Age 0-2: This is normal. The inside arch of the foot is still developing, and there is a lot of fatty tissue.

Age 2-5: Feet are starting to develop their final posture as balance develops. Naturally loose ligaments around the ankles may allow the feet to roll inwards giving the impression of flat feet. Clues that something may be wrong include, badly misshapen toes, unwillingingness to walk reasonable distances, complaints of foot or leg pain.

IN-TOEING

This is common in toddlers, but disappears around age 5.

OUT-TOEING

Ocasionally seen, but it should improve as balance matures.

BOW-LEGGED

Common in 1 year olds.

KNOCK KNEES

Common in 2-3 year olds.
